Only three of the eight Montreal YMCAs to eventually reopen with their fitness centres

The YMCA said it lost close $20 meg concluding year due to the COVID-19 pandemic and expects to too lose around $20 million this year as a result of the public health crunch. Information technology expects the pattern of acquirement losses to proceed in 2022.

When the Quebec authorities allows the reopening of gyms in Montreal, but three of the YMCAs on the isle of Montreal volition render equally fitness centres.

They are the YMCAs in Cartierville, on Parc Ave., and in Westmount. The other 5 volition remain closed equally fitness centres though some house community activities.

The downtown YMCA and the West Isle YMCA volition not re-open at all unless the YMCA finds financial partners for the buildings. The N.D.Chiliad. YMCA will be dorsum in September. Last Dec, Stéphane Vaillancourt, president of the Quebec YMCAs, confirmed in a letter of the alphabet to Côte-des-Neiges—Notre-Matriarch-de-Grâce mayor Sue Montgomery that the borough's YMCA will remain open through to 2027.

But Wednesday in an interview with the Gazette, Vaillancourt nuanced that pledge.

"That's the delivery we made at the end of December," said Vaillancourt.

"Nosotros want to respect that absolutely and nosotros will exist working with the borough and the community to adapt and make all the necessary changes to the programming to make sure that we accept the best possible plan experience for the members. We are committed to keeping it open for the next seven years. It will remain a fitness eye and the letter of the alphabet that we signed says that we need to make sure besides that the operations remain viable. So we need to make sure that we remain viable there. … We have to stay whole financially."

The City of Montreal in December agreed to purchase the land adjacent to the Due north.D.G. YMCA for $ten million and it is going to use the land to create a park and build social housing.

The Pointe St-Charles YMCA is no longer used as a fettle centre and will continue to only house community projects. The St-Laurent YMCA will besides cease being a fitness center.

The YMCA said it lost close $twenty million last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic and expects to also lose around $20 million this year as a result of the public health crisis. It expects the pattern of acquirement losses to proceed in 2022.

But the pandemic is just accelerating a tendency that began before the pandemic. Its previous business organization model simply no longer works. In Nov 2019, Vaillancourt announced that it would exist endmost 3 of its YMCAs, the location in Complexe Guy Favreau and the YMCAs in Hochelaga-Maisonneuve and Pointe-St-Charles. In fact, the Pointe-St-Charles location has remained open up just just for community activities.

"The fitness membership model was frail, even earlier the pandemic," said Vaillancourt. "It's something we take to look into because the large gyms and large pools, the buildings that contain these facilities are but too expensive for us to assume on our own now."

What the YMCA wants to do is operate its buildings with other partners, hopefully with players in the municipal, educational and health sectors or with private companies involved in social and customs projects. The Cartierville and du Parc YMCAs are already existence run in partnership with the Urban center of Montreal. The Urban center pays virtually $800,000 annually to the du Parc YMCA and $i one thousand thousand to the Cartierville one. In return, the Urban center uses the buildings to business firm its own community activities.

Another choice the YMCA is looking at is to sell the buildings and so remain every bit a tenant.

"I manner or some other, we want to maintain our touch in the sector," said Vaillancourt.

Selling to a commercial developer and but leaving a building is "not on the table at this signal," said Vaillancourt. "We want to make sure we remain on site considering all of our locations are excellent ones and we want to stay there. And so nosotros want to notice partners that are interested in the impact the Y has."
